Healthy Eating?

I live in a house with my mom and three younger siblings so there are always snacks snacks and more snacks. I tried to get her to buy more healthy things but my brothers are so picky! I really want to change my eating habits and not eat junk but its hard when your surrounded by all the cookies and chips we all love. Any ideas?

Re: Healthy Eating?

I'm not an expert, but maybe check into having your mother pick up some 100 calorie packs.  This way you are limited on what you eat, and your borothers are satisifed too.  If that doesn't work, get some zip-lock baggies and make yoru own 100 calorie packs or packs that limit the amount you eat.  Sometimes its not what you eat it's the amount you eat.

Or maybe your mom can buy you some healthy snacks along with the normal snacks she purchases for the house.

I hope it works out for you!

Re: Healthy Eating?

Hey Ashlee

I'm sure that's a tough situation. One thing I've seen work time and again is making sure you are getting plenty of protein throughout the day. If you're considering some of those high-carb snacks, make yourself eat a moderate piece of chicken, turkey, or other lean meat, or have a cup of cottage cheese first. The protein will help reduce your cravings, fill you up so you might not eat as much, and even if you do eat something, it won't have the same effect on your blood-sugar levels. Hope that helps.

Ashlee

There's a short answer to this and a VERY long answer. The short answer is that deli meat is better than not getting enough protein, but not as good as unprocessed meat. Hormel makes a Natural Select line that does not have preservatives in it, which is better than those that do. When it comes to unprocessed meats, if it's commercially grown, a leaner cut will be better for you as the fatty acid profile of commercial meat and poultry is not that great for you. The best choice is grass-fed, free-range beef and pastured chicken and turkey, pork, etc. When animals are raised on their natural diet and allowed to move around freely, their fatty acid profiles are much healthier and you don't have to be concerned about the fat content as much. I suspect each point above leads to additional questions, which is why the answer could be several pages long as well. Of course, if you have more questions, keep asking. Hope that helps!

Re: Healthy Eating?

Ashlee that's awesome!

I think Tom makes a great point aswell with the balance of protine in your diet. He mentions Cottage Cheese and that's a great idea.  I myself never really liked cottage cheese till lately, I decided to put a little salt, pepper & a few dashes of hot sauce or even Salsa to give it some flavor.  Now I am a big fan and it's a great source of protein like Tom said.

Have a great day!
