How effective is swimming in weight loss?

I was wondering how to calculate calorie burn while swimming. I usually put in about 32 lengths of pool (1/2 mile) per swimming session. Anyone knows how this translates into calorie burn count?

If you google something like "swimming calorie counter" you will come up with a lot of options.  Here's a couple that looked good.

Re: How effective is swimming in weight loss?
I wear my heart rate monitor while swimming.  It all depends on how hard/low your intensity is, how much you currently weigh, etc... I personally burn about 10 calories a minute while swimming, on average, and this is made up of a 20 lap swim followed by about 8 laps of drills & ending with about another 16 lap swim...so my heart rate going up & down during that time depending on what I'm doing.

These are great suggestions. I havent ever worn my Polar Watch in the pool but thought about it. I usually go to spin , core or yoga and then run through the shower and head to the pool.My muscles are already warmed up and I swim easier through the water. I try to get in one lap with speed to get my heart rate and respiration rate up. I then swim the rest of my workout at a slow to moderate pace. I try to get in 15-20 laps.

Good luck with our workout.

Great responses guys. A heart rate monitor is going to give you the best calculation as to how many calories your burning, but what is your true goal? if it's  weight loss, i can certainly give you a few drills and workouts to apply while your swimming that will help. Stop by my office anytime Monday through Thursday between 10-6pm and if i'm not with a member already, i'll gladly lend you some help!

Re: How effective is swimming in weight loss?
I can tell you firsthand that swimming = calories burned. Simply because of how freaking hungry it makes me. My wife says the same thing. We get out of the water starving. So I do like to eating a little something ahead of time to keep me from over-eating afterwards, and thus offsetting the caloric burn I just experienced.
