Summer is known for sun and fun, and the sun-kissed look it can create. As the long days grow shorter and the temperatures dip, the summer color you’ve gained either from the sun or more skin-friendly methods like self-tanners and spray tans can quickly fade away with the passing days.
To help keep that radiant glow, a good bronzer might just be your best friend. But where do you start when looking for the right one? Here are some useful tips that will lead you to the bronzer that’s right for you.
- Take a look through your makeup bag and note which colors rule your eye shadows, lipsticks, and blushes. A peach-toned bronzer will be your best bet if you use a lot of corals or peaches. An earth-toned bronzer is right for you if you find a bevy of beige.
- Use the back of your hand as a gauge for skin color. If possible, apply the bronzer to this area before purchasing to check if it’s a good match and flatters your skin tone.
- When shopping, bring your favorite makeup along. Compare the eye shadow, blush, and lipstick you use most often with the bronzer to make sure they go well together; they should complement, not clash.
- For more color options, choose a bronzer with several hues. Many powder bronzers come in “multi“ formats like strips, mosaics, or a medley of colors. When applying this type of bronzer, use a brush and sweep over the face in areas the sun would normally hit – forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.
- Choose the right type for you. Powders are usually best for those with normal or oily skin and are quick and easy to apply, but can get dark quickly if too much is used. A cream bronzer is especially good for dry skin and can be mixed with your moisturizer to create the desired shade, but requires this extra step. Gel bronzers are lightweight and create and even all-over color, but shouldn’t be used over powder.
- Your bronzer should change with the seasons. In summer, use a darker shade when your skin is naturally tan. In winter, go with a lighter shade to avoid an orange hue.
