Clum (L), Varley (C), and Ward (R) have their eyes on the National MVP prize, which will be announced on Wednesday.

The Most Valuable Player award winners were made public on Friday, and now each region's MVP has a shot at the National MVP title.  With the Wednesday announcement close at hand, it's time to look at each player's MVP résumés:

Jesse Steele, Knicks - Berkeley Heights

Though he made just five appearances for the Knicks, Steele earned a reputation in New Jersey as an offensive sparkplug.  His 32.3 ppg led Berkeley Heights in scoring this Summer, and with two headline-worthy performances (a 10 for 19 three-point shooting display in his debut, and a triple-double on August 12th), Steele was a lock for MVP out East.

Kenny Olafeso, Wet Bandits - Bloomington South

Alongside twin brother and Bloomington South's Defensive Player of the Season, Peter Olafeso, Kenny led the Wet Bandits to a 7-1 record.  Including the playoffs, Kenny Olafeso missed just 32 minutes of action this Summer.  A constant threat, Kenny posted tremendous all-around averages of 21.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.3 rpg, and 2 spg - oh, and a season shooting clip of 61.5% certainly won't hurt his chances either.

Hammie Ward III, Storm - Lake Houston

A big man with range, Hammie Ward III was - and is - a near unstoppable weapon in the Storm's arsenal.  With six double-doubles (including one in his UH debut, possibly his best game to date), a seven-game streak with at least one block to end the Summer, and a 45% 3PT shooting clip, Ward would be a handful for any team in Ultimate Hoops.

Jon Bowling, Parliament - Omaha

Bowling may have missed three games, but when he was on the court, there was none better.  Bowling won the Defensive Player award as well, and averaging 13.8 rpg, 1.1 spg, and 2.5 bpg indicates just how strong an interior presence he is.  Bowling also shot 53% from the field and had three games with 18 rebounds.

Dan Morrow, Wolfpack - Overland Park

The centerpiece of the Wolfpack's unbeaten Summer, Morrow had at least 9 rebounds and 3 assists in every game.  Though his shooting stroke slumped in the final four games, Morrow still managed 52% FGs on the season.  The rookie will look to build on his impressive inaugural campaign that saw him lead the Pack in scoring, rebounding, and assists.

Chad Clum, Str8 Heat - Scottsdale and Tempe

Mr. Triple-Double did not win a Gold Cup for the second straight year, but if anyone is the frontrunner for National MVP, it has to be Chad Clum.  Playing for his Str8 Heat franchise in both UH Phoenix locations, Clum was an absolute wrecking ball: a combined nine triple-doubles, six games with at least 20 rebounds, and a ridiculous 65% combined shooting clip.

Doug Lambert, No Size - Warrenville

Shooting 57% from the floor and 52% from downtown, Lambert was an inside-outside assassin who finished the Chicago summer with 26.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg.  His mysterious absence from the Gold Cup game cost No Size a chance at back-to-back titles, but make no mistake - Lambert is a force to be reckoned with.

Ian Varley, And 1 - West County

David Watson may have had more impressive numbers, but Varley won the championship and he was no slouch in the statistical department either.  Varley finished the summer with 19.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg, and 1.2 bpg, and on an And 1 team that thrived on player rotation, Varley's constant presence in the lineup struck fear in the hearts of West County opponents.

THRILLERS: West County (L) and Omaha (R) saw drama in their All-Star Games, while Leland Devlin (center) sniped the three-point crown in Phoenix.

- Tempe All-Stars 92, Scottsdale All-Stars 90: Chad Clum (Str8 Heat) chose Scottsdale, and led the team in points (26), rebounds (11) and shooting (85% FGs).  Scottsdale took a five-point lead at the break as Tyrone Jones (PHX Ballas) had 21 points (82% FGs), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals off the bench.  But Tempe fought back in the second half thanks to Earl Vercher of the Smashers (23 points, 64% FGs) and Ashton Thomas of the Tempe Ballers (14 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls), tying the game with under a minute to go.  Tempe held for the last shot, and, in fitting fashion, Victor Benjamin (arguably Phoenix's best offensive talent) of Arizona's Best hit the final shot as time expired to give Tempe the win.  Benjamin finished with a whopping statline of 29 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

- The Phoenix 3-Point Contest was won by the Smashers' Leland Devlin.  The sharp-shooting guard from Tempe shot 42% from beyond the arc this summer, though he went 0-6 in his final two games with his team.  Anthony Tinsley had 11 points in the final round and Jon Ziri held a slim lead with 12.  But it was Devlin's last shot - a money ball that pushed Devlin to 13 points - that gave him the title of Phoenix's 3-point king.

- Omaha East 125, Omaha West 119: The Eastern All-Stars of Omaha had seven players in double figures (led by Ryan Foster of the Lunch Ladies - 27 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts) on their way to a shootout triumph.  For the West, it was the trio of Marcus Vontz of the Bruins (35 points, 12 rebounds), TJ Rickert of Parliament (32 pts, 8-14 3PTs, 7 rebs, 4 stls), and Mike VanderWilt of Cars2Day/Wall Solutions (22 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) that kept their squad in the game.  Ultimately, the run-and-gun of the East and a +21 rebounding advantage gave them the win.

- Kansas City West 110, Kansas City East 91: Three JC Hoops stars led a rampant second half for the West, as Larry Pandjaris (41 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 10 stls), Zach Witterstaetter (18 pts, 15 rebs, 7 asts), and John Creal (29 pts, 58% FGs, 12 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls) overwhelmed Dan Morrow (23 pts, 42% 3PTs, 10 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) and the East.  The West's 66-point session after the break forced the East to play up-tempo, something that brought more offense (East 1st half - 41 points ... 2nd half - 50 points) but also far more turnovers (16 in total).

- St. Louis West 71, St. Louis East 70: Ian Varley's half-court heave as time expired clanged off the rim and out, giving the Western All-Stars victory by the slimmest of margins.  Rich Wiedner of The Squad (23 points) led the way for the West, while Sean Rose (Wine Chateau - 15 pts, 8 rebs, 2 stls) and Hasnain Aijaz (Bulls - 13 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) played key minutes.  20 points from Varley (And 1) and a 14-point, 5-rebound, 3-block night from Colin O'Neal (Arches) gave the East hope, but the final result favored Anjo Marasigan (11 points, 15 rebounds) and the West.

- With a four-way tie for first in the St. Louis 3-Point Contest (Alex Van Vliet, Paul Haley, Mike Brown, and Mika Ewald all had 19 points), a shootout ensued to determine the best perimeter shooter.  Ewald finished with 9, Brown with 10, Van Vliet with 14, and the champion of St Louis' 3-Point Contest, Paul Haley, racked up 17 points to win the shootout.

THREE'S COMPANY: Maurice Lamar and the 8-0 Wolfpack (L) are the frontrunners in Overland Park.  Can JC Hoops star Larry Pandjanis (C) and the darkhorse Cavaliers (R) do anything to stop their perfect run?

The Celtics escaped a scrappy Tigers squad 78-75 last night in Overland Park.  It was a forgetful shooting night for the C's, who finished 43% from the field, 53% from the line, and a mere 15% from beyond the arc.  The Tigers took advantage of the Celts' offensive woes thanks to their All-Star Manny Davis, who notched 20 points on 62% shooting.  Davis' teammates Austin Berke (12 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls) and Justin McAuley (15 pts, 8 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls) helped keep the Tigers close, but going without a single three-pointer in the matchup stung the upset-minded hopefuls.  With Tyler Putnam (17 pts, 13 rebs, 4 asts) controlling the interior and Scott Underwood (18 pts, 60% FGs, 7 rebs) providing timely buckets, the Celtics held their slim halftime lead to score their fourth victory of the season. The two squads will do it all over again next week, in a first round playoff rematch of their regular season finale.

The playoff seedings are now set with the close of Kansas City's regular season (and check out how Sal Vegas thinks the region will end up), so here's the rundown:

1.  Wolfpack (8-0)
2.  JC Hoops (7-1)
3.  Cavaliers (4-4)
4.  Celtics (4-4)

Since the Cavaliers and Celtics split their regular season games, the Cavaliers get the 3-seed because their average points per game allowed (68.7) was better than the Celtics (72.8).

5.  Tigers (1-7)
6.  LTF Ballers (0-8)

Next Wednesday's slate for Overland Park:

BYE - #1 Wolfpack, #2 JC Hoops

7pm - #3 Cavaliers vs. #6 LTF Ballers
8pm - #4 Celtics vs. #5 Tigers
The All-Star game immediately follows the Celtics/Tigers game at 9pm, so check out the Overland Park league page to see if you made the starting lineup for the East or West!  Reserves will be announced in the coming days as well, so check back for updates.

The Career Leaders page received a major upgrade earlier today, as the statistical table now displays the career totals that you, the players, have amassed during your Ultimate Hoops tenure.  You can access the page on uhlife.com by clicking the "Career Leaders" link in the "UH All-Access" box on the left-hand side of the page.

The three drop-down menus on the page allow you to search for career leaders via region (National or league-specific), division (Top Flight or Recreational), and category (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls) so check it out today and find out where you stand in the UH history books!

Maurice Lamar is a 3PT specialist for the undefeated Wolfpack in Kansas City.

The Wolfpack bring an all-around basketball mindset to the courts, relying on a balanced attack (six players average at least eight points per game) and a deep squad (six players average at least 28 minutes per game) to bring them quality wins.  At 6-0, the Wolfpack's approach has worked all summer as they have become the new power of the Kansas City region - but their strategy hinges on the vital shooting touch of Maurice Lamar.

Lamar, at age 41, is a wily veteran on the Wolfpack, whose leadership and limitless 3PT-range have made him a key figure in the KC playoff chase.  Lamar has averaged 3.7 three-pointers a game during his three-year reign in Ultimate Hoops, and currently is having the best 3PT% season of his career (41% from deep).  He also holds the regional record for most triples in a single game (8 on July 22nd, 2009 against the Tigers), and has made at least four three-pointers in a game a remarkable 12 times during his 20-game career.  That's right - if Maurice Lamar sets foot on the court for a UH game, there's a 60% chance he'll drain at least four from downtown.

We got a hold of Maurice to let him show the UH world what he's all about:

1. Who is your favorite band, and what is your favorite song by that band?
Jon Bon Jovi, "Livin’ on a Prayer"

2. What is your greatest achievement both on and off the court?
On court - Playing All-American basketball
Off court - When I bought my first BIG house

3. If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would you go?
Amsterdam, Netherlands

4. What is your favorite movie?
Braveheart

5. What other Life Time activity or sport would you “ultimatize”?
Swimming

6. With every player in NBA history to choose from, who would be in the starting lineup of your Ultimate Dream Team?

Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan, Wilt Chamberlin

7. What was your first job?
Selling shoes at "Just For Feet"

8. If you could change one NBA rule to your liking, what change would you make and why?
I would make the 3-point line farther away, because that puts the real shooters in the game.

9. You have one courtside ticket for your Ultimate Hoops game.  Who do you give it to?
My Mom

10. Down by one, five seconds left.  Which UHer/teammate do you give the ball to?

Dan Morrow!

RED, WHITE, AND BLUE: While Parliament shot the lights out in Omaha, the Cadets were busy stunning the Riddlers in Bloomington South.

TOP FLIGHT

Parliament flew up the PR charts - garnering an 11-point raise in their score thanks to a 128-spot against the Steamers last night - as the most recent edition of the Power Rankings was released earlier this afternoon.  The Omaha region again flustered the summit of the PRs, pushing three squads into the top-5.  Along with #1 Parliament, the Lunch Ladies (whose shock loss to Lit Lounge hit them with a 9-point, 2-slot drop) and Lit Lounge (+8 points, +4 spots) found themselves among the UH elite.

Said Parliament's guard TJ Rickert about the newest Power Rankings: "I'm not sure how we got [the #1 ranking], but we'll take it.  We live and die by the three.  It doesn't take but 10 seconds and we will have a shot up."  Rickert continued, this time about the Omaha region: "The Lunch Ladies and Bruins play similar to us.  They have also had some losses and it just shows that some weeks you're hot, and some weeks you're not.  The cool thing about Omaha is that any team can win any week."

The surprise of the PRs was the Hurricanes of Lake Houston suffering a fall (of sorts).  Despite gaining three points and knocking off the previously unbeaten Storm, the Hurricanes dropped from #3 to #4.  The Wolfpack (St. Louis) continue to hum along as they rise to #2 on the charts, but their 0.33 Strength of Schedule will come back to bite them should they suffer a Summer setback.

The Goon Squad (Tempe) joined Parliament as a big winner in the Power Rankings.  After an 81-69 triumph over Arizona Gold Cup holders the Dream Team, the Goon Squad sit at 5-0 atop the Tempe standings and enjoyed a 6-slot increase in their ranking.

Among the weird from today's PR release: the 3-win Magic of Chicago are 47th, behind the winless Nets of Berkeley Heights.  The problem for the Magic?  Jerseys!  A diabolical UNICOMP* of two has relegated the squad to a far worse fate than their performance deserves.  Get with the UH spirit, Magic - order your jerseys today.

(* The UNICOMP is a 1-10 score that ranks your team's effort of uniform coordination.  Having UH-approved jerseys that match will greatly increase your score.)

The heat of Bloomington South's second-half chase has left the Rockets (PR #9), Wet Bandits (PR #12), and Raptors (PR #15) clumped on the fringe of Power Ranking greatness.  The ever-persistent Mavericks (PR #22) are a ways back, but they have been on a tear recently (won four of their last five) and could make some serious noise on the charts with a win next Tuesday against the Wet Bandits.

RECREATIONAL (Minneapolis)

The North-siders again claim the top two spots, even though those two squads played each other last night.  The Ninja Turtles are now 10 points clear of the Celtics in the PRs, and have nailed down the top spot for the second straight week.  Further down the charts is another Fridley battle - this time with the region's "Old Firm" contenders of Spring 2009, Cobra Kai and The Rapture.  Locked in a middle-of-the-table PR fight for most of the season, Cobra Kai finally dealt The Rapture a lethal blow.  At 5-2, Cobra Kai have the 3-seed sealed; while the 3-4 Rapture have struggled mightily all summer.  The Rapture can do their best to right the ship with a win next week against their fellow 3-4 contenders Life Time's Finest, a matchup that will determine the four and five seeds.

The South is in flux after the Cadets' monumental victory at mid-week.  The Cadets vaulted five spots from #12 to #7 while boosting their PR score 17 points.  On the other end of that game, the Riddlers stumbled two spots to #6 and are just fractions of a point ahead of the Cadets.  The Bobcats benefitted most from the Riddlers/Cadets clash, as they occupied the Riddlers' vacated 4-spot with a 3-point boost.

The big story entering next week - the Thunderbolts.  The franchise's fourth season has been extremely testing, arguably the most difficult schedule they have had in their history.  It won't get any easier next Wednesday, as they will be fighting for their playoff lives against the 4-3 Nuggets.

WORLD BEATERS: The Lunch Ladies (left), Wolfpack (center), and Hurricanes (right) went 1-2-3 in this week's Power Rankings.

TOP FLIGHT

Omaha defended its title as Ultimate Hoops' most highly power ranked region today; the Nebraskan contingent put three teams in the top-8 (a slight fall from having three in the top-7 last week) and, for the third week running, kept the top spot in the Power Rankings thanks to the Lunch Ladies' score of 154.44 (-3.9 points from last Friday).  The Wolfpack (KC) garnered a score of 147.18 (+4.74) while the Hurricanes (HOU) posted 141.64 (+2.52) as these two clubs continue to nip at the Lunch Ladies' heels.

Though the 13 points seperating #1 from #3 will be a fight that lasts the rest of Summer, an intriguing chase that spans from #4 (The Squad, STL) to #15 (Goon Squad, TEM) is heating up.  The 12 squads in this range are within 12 points of each other, and it boasts the impressive likes of Movers & Shakers (SCT), the Wet Bandits (MPLS), and No Size (CHI).

The most difficult strength of schedule (SOS) to date brings about a tie, as 41st-ranked FSD and 49th-ranked Nationwide - both from Scottsdale - have faced opponents with a combined winning percentage of 72%.  With six teams at either 4-1 or 1-4, Off Constantly (PR #19) at 5-0, and the aforementioned Nationwide at 0-5, the extremes of the Scottsdale region have left it with no teams ranked from 23-40.

Teams to watch next week: Team Live of Houston and the PHX Ballas of Scottsdale.  Team Live (PR #21) were beaten soundly by the Hurricanes yesterday - but it was the first time this summer that the Hurricanes actually sweated out the result.  The Hurricanes' closest game before their matchup with Team Live was a 103-75 win against the Rockets in late July.  Team Live cut that 28-point margin in half, and though they still lost, Team Live can go into their game against the Rockets next Thursday with a lot of confidence.  I'll peg them with a three slot rise next week.  For the PHX Ballas (PR #22), they've taken back-to-back games and are locked in a three-way tie for 2nd-place in Scottsdale.  As the scheduling gods would have it, the PHX Ballas play broken and battered Str8 Heat next week in a game that will bump one of these 4-1 squads out of Scottsdale's regular season title picture.  Look for the Ballas to capitalize on this opportunity - I say the Ballas jump four or five spots in next week's PRs.

RECREATIONAL (Minneapolis)

Just like last week, MPLS North goes 1-2 but the South claims eight of the top-12.  The Ninja Turtles knocked the Celtics from the PR summit thanks to their 61-point evisceration of the MN Lakers.  But none of it will matter next week, when the Turtles and Celtics duel for both PR and Northern supremacy.  Cobra Kai (PR #7) and The Rapture (PR #8) will be anxiously watching that game.

The Sphinx's 3-0 start is a distant memory now, as the former heavyweights of MPLS South have dropped three straight and have sunk to a season-low power ranking of 14.  They will face Upright Citizens Brigade, owners of a roller-coaster 3-3 record, in a massive tilt between two squads on the fringe of the playoffs.

Teams to watch next week: The Riddlers and Nuggets.  Nick Roell's franchise mopped the floor with the Sphinx on Wednesday - even without Roell making an appearance.  As a date with the Bobcats looms on August 26th, the Riddlers can't overlook their matchup with the Cadets next week.  A 3-3 record, a pair of close defeats to UCB and the Timberpuppies, and an unparalleled level of familiarity with the opposition (the Cadets have played the Riddlers in five straight seasons) make the Cadets a definite trap game for the men in green.  The Nuggets, meanwhile, are winners of three straight entering their mammoth battle with the Timberpuppies, who they beat last season to end the Tpups' 15-game reign over the MPLS South region.  The Nuggets have always had the talent, but never the defining moment - next Wednesday, we find out if the Nuggets' moment finally comes to fruition.
