Clum (L), Varley (C), and Ward (R) have their eyes on the National MVP prize, which will be announced on Wednesday.

The Most Valuable Player award winners were made public on Friday, and now each region's MVP has a shot at the National MVP title.  With the Wednesday announcement close at hand, it's time to look at each player's MVP résumés:

Jesse Steele, Knicks - Berkeley Heights

Though he made just five appearances for the Knicks, Steele earned a reputation in New Jersey as an offensive sparkplug.  His 32.3 ppg led Berkeley Heights in scoring this Summer, and with two headline-worthy performances (a 10 for 19 three-point shooting display in his debut, and a triple-double on August 12th), Steele was a lock for MVP out East.

Kenny Olafeso, Wet Bandits - Bloomington South

Alongside twin brother and Bloomington South's Defensive Player of the Season, Peter Olafeso, Kenny led the Wet Bandits to a 7-1 record.  Including the playoffs, Kenny Olafeso missed just 32 minutes of action this Summer.  A constant threat, Kenny posted tremendous all-around averages of 21.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.3 rpg, and 2 spg - oh, and a season shooting clip of 61.5% certainly won't hurt his chances either.

Hammie Ward III, Storm - Lake Houston

A big man with range, Hammie Ward III was - and is - a near unstoppable weapon in the Storm's arsenal.  With six double-doubles (including one in his UH debut, possibly his best game to date), a seven-game streak with at least one block to end the Summer, and a 45% 3PT shooting clip, Ward would be a handful for any team in Ultimate Hoops.

Jon Bowling, Parliament - Omaha

Bowling may have missed three games, but when he was on the court, there was none better.  Bowling won the Defensive Player award as well, and averaging 13.8 rpg, 1.1 spg, and 2.5 bpg indicates just how strong an interior presence he is.  Bowling also shot 53% from the field and had three games with 18 rebounds.

Dan Morrow, Wolfpack - Overland Park

The centerpiece of the Wolfpack's unbeaten Summer, Morrow had at least 9 rebounds and 3 assists in every game.  Though his shooting stroke slumped in the final four games, Morrow still managed 52% FGs on the season.  The rookie will look to build on his impressive inaugural campaign that saw him lead the Pack in scoring, rebounding, and assists.

Chad Clum, Str8 Heat - Scottsdale and Tempe

Mr. Triple-Double did not win a Gold Cup for the second straight year, but if anyone is the frontrunner for National MVP, it has to be Chad Clum.  Playing for his Str8 Heat franchise in both UH Phoenix locations, Clum was an absolute wrecking ball: a combined nine triple-doubles, six games with at least 20 rebounds, and a ridiculous 65% combined shooting clip.

Doug Lambert, No Size - Warrenville

Shooting 57% from the floor and 52% from downtown, Lambert was an inside-outside assassin who finished the Chicago summer with 26.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg.  His mysterious absence from the Gold Cup game cost No Size a chance at back-to-back titles, but make no mistake - Lambert is a force to be reckoned with.

Ian Varley, And 1 - West County

David Watson may have had more impressive numbers, but Varley won the championship and he was no slouch in the statistical department either.  Varley finished the summer with 19.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg, and 1.2 bpg, and on an And 1 team that thrived on player rotation, Varley's constant presence in the lineup struck fear in the hearts of West County opponents.

The Career Leaders page received a major upgrade earlier today, as the statistical table now displays the career totals that you, the players, have amassed during your Ultimate Hoops tenure.  You can access the page on uhlife.com by clicking the "Career Leaders" link in the "UH All-Access" box on the left-hand side of the page.

The three drop-down menus on the page allow you to search for career leaders via region (National or league-specific), division (Top Flight or Recreational), and category (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls) so check it out today and find out where you stand in the UH history books!

Kobe Bryant and Daniel Artest in May: Brokering the move for Ron?

On Thursday, Ron Artest announced on ESPN's Sportscenter that he would be signing a new deal with the LA Lakers for the upcoming season.  There will be plenty of TiVo-worthy moments with a Kobe/Ron tandem in LA next year, so get your remotes ready.

It looks like Ron's younger brother, Daniel Artest of UH Indy's Scream City, got in with Kobe before ink even hit paper.  The lead photo was taken in May during the Rockets/Lakers second round playoff matchup.  Did Dan bridge the gap between Kobe and Ron during this meeting?  Is Dan planning an NBA comeback, and are the Lakers going to double-down on the Artest family?  Or did Artest just sign Kobe to a blockbuster, earth-shattering deal to Scream City?

Hard to say for sure, but what we do know is this: those purple-and-gold headphones are sweet.

History Repeated: Gold Cup number two was just as sweet for the Naptown Hooperz

The script from the first season of UH Indy was so good, the Naptown Hooperz decided to make a sequel.

For the second straight season, the Hooperz lost to the Kenny Kings in the regular season - only to come back and defeat the regional powerhouse in the Gold Cup in a nail-biting, defensive thriller 46-44. Last season's championship was certainly a surprise, but this go-around there is no doubting the Naptown Hooperz' greatness. Sal Vegas will need to adjust his lines next season if the Kenny Kings and Naptown Hooperz complete the Indy Gold Cup trilogy.

Darriel Hunter won Gold Cup MVP honors for his 20-point, 6-rebound, 2-assist night for the Hooperz. Naptown did a fantastic job of locking up the Kenny Kings - who were without leading scorer Steven WIlliams - holding them to just 33% shooting. The Hooperz were down at the break 24-17, but used a marvelous late run to earn the 2-point win. Terron Bibbs of the Kings (16 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts, 3 stls) did what he could to keep his squad alive, but the Hooperz combo of Hunter and Donald Crumpton (8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists) finalized the result.

So what do you think Indianapolis? Is there a three-peat in the Naptown Hooperz' future? And what do the Kenny Kings need to do to finally get over the hump?

Lloyd Carr celebrates with the Gold Cup.

On Saturday, word came down from the UH League offices regarding the winners of the Top Flight regional MVP awards. Each of those winners become nominees for the National MVP Award.

A firestorm of controversy surrounds the nominations, though, as defending National MVP Chad Clum did not win the Scottsdale MVP despite some LeBron-esque numbers. The Movers & Shakers front office was not available for immediate comment.

Despite the incident, league officials are currently reviewing every candidate's résumé and will be prepared to crown the National MVP on Friday. Until then, good luck to each of these players:

Phillip Aholt - Pup 'n' Suds, Scottsdale
Glenn Keller - Bulldogs, Indianapolis
Duke Seward - Vertically Challenged, Chicago
John Hawkins - The Show, Kansas City
Sean Kelly - Champion Bank, Denver
David Watson - Wine Chateau, St. Louis
Todd Klostermann - Rabine Financial, Omaha
Luke Witt - Kings, Minneapolis
Parfait Nayigihugu - Arizona's Best, Tempe

The Naptown Hooperz cruised to their second straight Gold Cup game by beating the High Flyers 80-63 last night in Indianapolis. The Hooperz' stonewall defense was there, as usual, holding the High Flyers to just 37% from the field. The real surprise was Naptown's offense, which clicked to the tune of 53% shooting and received a major boost from Darriel Hunter who scored a season-high 27 points for his squad. Hunter's teammate Donald Crumpton (14 pts, 67% FG, 5 rebs, 2 stls) also had a solid game, contributing the all-around play that made the Hooperz contenders all season long. Jake Johnson had 18 points and 5 rebounds for the defeated Flyers. The High Flyers season might be over, but they can take solace in their semi-finals appearance as they look ahead to the Summer campaign.

A tale of two very distinct halves led to the 87-63 final that saw the Kenny Kings stomp Mo's. Without their floor general Patrick Jackson, Mo's had a rough night offensively shooting just 43%, committing 11 turnovers, and accumulating only 8 assists on 26 made FGs. The iron-five of Mo's fell to a trio of good performances from Kenny Kings' stars Steven Williams (28 pts, 4 rebs, 3 stls), Ricky Buckley (22 pts, 12 rebs, 2 blks), and Michael Crain (16 pts, 12 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls). The Kenny Kings found themselves down 39-37 at the break, but a dominant 50-24 second half for the Kenny Kings turned the game on its head.

The two results from the Indianapolis semi-finals means we will have a rematch of last season's championship between the Naptown Hooperz and Kenny Kings in next week's Gold Cup. Like last season, the Kenny Kings defeated the Hooperz in the regular season - will that lead to a repeat upset in the Gold Cup with the Naptown Hooperz enjoying the glory? Or will the Kenny Kings exact a measure of revenge?
