Luke Witt, National MVP of Ultimate Hoops, after his Kings squad won the MPLS Gold Cup.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ultimate Hoops announced Luke Witt had won the National MVP Award for the 2009 Spring season.

Witt led the Kings to a perfect 11-0 record and a Gold Cup this season, as he averaged 30.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg, and 4.3 apg while also posting one of the greatest games in UH history back in week 3.  Witt had never averaged more than 25.8 ppg in his previous nine seasons and had not won his first ever regional MVP until this season despite some terrific past campaigns.  But Witt could care less about that now - he has a deserved National MVP under his belt.

Luke - congratulations on a great season and the National MVP!

No subs needed: The iron-five of the Riddlers earned the Gold Cup at the Target Center.

Ultimate Hoops returned to the Target Center this past Saturday for the first time since our inaugural season with another first - North division vs. South division in a city-wide championship game for Spring '09 bragging rights. And the Riddlers and Cobra Kai didn't disappoint.

Without their three big men (Andy Steingas, Alonzo Anderson, and Cy Amundson), the Riddlers utilized some clutch guard play to defeat Cobra Kai 66-65. With the Riddlers down by one with 20 seconds remaining, Cobra Kai guard Dustin Dupont (13 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls) missed the front end of a one-and-one which led to an Isaac Vogel lay-up (12 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts) that gave the Riddlers the 66-65 lead. Cobra Kai would get a last possession with 5.9 seconds remaining, but they were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Elation for Nick Roell (L) and Isaac Vogel (R) as they accept the MPLS Rec Gold Cup.

The Riddlers won their third Gold Cup of the past five seasons, and they have Louie Trejo to thank. Sick with the flu and knowing his team needed a fifth, Trejo pulled a Jordan and scored 29 points while under the weather to lead his team to the championship. Riddlers captain and GM Nick Roell (17 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts, 4-7 from deep) kept a steady hand throughout the game to propel his franchise to the top as well, while Don Kahl (11 rebounds, 3 blocks) clogged the middle and prevented Cobra Kai MVP candidate Luke Sontowski (12 points, 8 rebounds) from ever getting comfortable.

Cobra Kai put up a fantastic fight, a performance that will make the North division proud. Ron Jolin had 16 points, and Cobra Kai GM Dan Munsell posted a team-high 18 points despite some debilitating leg cramps in the second half.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, and congratulations to the Riddlers on their Gold Cup victory! The South division is sold out for Summer '09, but there are still spots open in the North. Think you might have a team that could be the next Cobra Kai? Click here to sign-up.

The South and North gather at center court after the MPLS All-Star Game.

Prior to the MPLS Rec Gold Cup, the North and South sent their best players to the Target Center to play in the Spring '09 All-Star Game, which was won by the North 84-76.

Dan Simmer (The Rapture) won All-Star Game MVP honors with 29 points (81% shooting), 6 assists, and 2 steals, while his North and The Rapture teammate Joe Epple (17 pts, 12 rebs, 6 asts, 2 stls) had a nice game as well. Greg Regenscheid (Team Ramrod - 10 points, 11 rebounds) racked up a double-double off the bench.

The South were led by Timberpuppies guard Marcus Marshall (24 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts, 2 stls), and also got needed help from Justin Montzka (UCB - 14 points, 7 rebounds) and Nick Roell (Riddlers - 10 pts, 4 asts, 3 stls).

PPT were all over the Bruins on Thursday, winning the Omaha Gold Cup.

The Omaha season ended with a Gold Cup upset, as 5th-seeded PicksPokerTables.com trumped the 2nd-seeded Bruins 86-78 in the championship. PPT's center Bobby Wiese had a mammoth performance on his way to the Gold Cup MVP, as he posted 29 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Bobby's brother, Tony Wiese, also played well, tallying 8 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals.

The Wiese tandem was too much firepower for the Bruins to handle. The Bruins' star guard Cy Carlson poured in 31 points (seven 3pts), 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals to keep his team in the contest, while his teammate Joel Schaffert (18 pts, six 3pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls) also aided in the Bruins' barrage of threes. In the end though, the Wiese brothers, in combination with Keith Sedlacek (25 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts) propelled PPT to the ultimate victory. Congrats on the Gold Cup guys.

Gold Cup MVP Bobby Wiese let's everyone know that PicksPokerTables.com is at the top of UH Omaha.

Following the Gold Cup, Omaha hosted it's All-Star Game as the East bumped the West in a 103-96 shootout. Mike VanderWilt (Cars2Day) of the East earned ASG MVP honors with a 35-point, 8-rebound effort while shooting 61% from the field and 92% from the line. His Eastern teammate who just finished the Gold Cup - Bobby Wiese - dominated as well, with 19 points, 20 rebounds, and 2 blocks off the bench. Troy Malone (Rabine Financial - 29 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts, 2 stls) completed the trifecta of great performances by the East All-Stars. After being down 66-46 with 18 minutes remaining, the West mounted a comeback thanks to Colton Johnson (Team 402 - 17 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts) and Jeremy Dean (Schutrz - 19 pts, 50% shooting, 6 rebs, 4 asts). But the East coolly hit their free throws, and left Omaha's All-Star game with a win.

The East (and a misguided Colton Johnson in the background) celebrated the Omaha ASG.

In the Scottsdale Finals, the Movers & Shakers lost their grip on the title as the PHX Ballas defeated them 74-70. Chad Clum had the performance of the night (29 points, 16 rebounds), but it wasn't enough to overcome Tyrone Jones (26 pts, 60 % shooting, 8 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) and the Ballas' upset bid.

The PHX Ballas paced their way to the win with four players in double-figures, a 49% team shooting clip, and just 4 turnovers. Their efficiency throughout the season earned them the Scottsdale title, and now they face the Dream Team for the Arizona Gold Cup. Well done, Ballas.

Scottsdale's representative in the Arizona Gold Cup - the PHX Ballas - celebrate their upset of defending title-holders Movers & Shakers.

Steve "Diamond" Schmidt and Ultimate Hoops brokered a one-game announcing contract earlier this morning for this Saturday's MPLS Rec Gold Cup at the Target Center. Details of the deal are fuzzy, but sources close to the negotiations overheard the phrase beer "water" used multiple times and Schmidt was seen leaving UH Offices with a complimentary case of Budweiser Aquafina.

Outraged he wasn't the first choice as PA announcer, Joe Neuenfeldt led a protester's march of nearly two people to the Chanhassen LifeTime Fitness which was quickly dispatched by local authorities. But Neuenfeldt's efforts may not have been in vain - Diamond only accepted a one-game contract, leaving the 2pm All-Star Game PA slot vacant... hmmm...

After beating the Bobcats, the Riddlers had a message for Cobra Kai: "You're next"

The chase for a Rec Gold Cup berth at the Target Center ended last night as the Riddlers exacted revenge on the Bobcats with a 62-55 win. Louie Trejo led all scorers with 33 points on 56% shooting, as he also set his season high for scoring with his performance.

The Bobcats offense was sporadic, as they committed 15 turnovers, shot 38% from the field, and saw to large a discrepancy in free throws to compete (Riddlers shot 23 FTs, Bobcats had 11). Don Teed (18 points, 4-8 from deep) and Ben Otto (10 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts, 5 stls) played very well, while Joe Epple's double-double (14 pts, 12 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls) kept the Bobcats in it. But Trejo, Don Kahl (12 rebounds, 6 assists), and Nick Roell (16 pts, 4-8 3pts, 4 rebs, 2 stls) paced the Riddlers to a 36-27 second half that decided the game.

So it's all set: Cobra Kai v. Riddlers at the Target Center this Saturday, 2pm. Can Cobra Kai continue their upset string? Or will the Riddlers claim their first Gold Cup since Fall 2008? As a certain NBA player once said - anything is possible.

Solving the Riddlers? Luke Sontowski and Dan Munsell played the role of scouts last night in Bloomington.

The Tropics beamed with pride as they celebrated with their new hardware.

What a difference a season makes.

The Tropics defeated the defending champion 30 Somethings in a 70-69 thriller last night to win their first Gold Cup, washing away some bitter memories of last season's landmark playoff upset. An up-tempo game from the Tropics forced the 30 Somethings into 18 turnovers.

The Tropics launched 20 threes and hitting 11 of them, a key stat that kept them alive. The 30 Somethings led at halftime 41-32 thanks to the play of guard Scott Anderson (17 pts, 8 rebs, 3 stls) and defensive POY Chad Wessel (15 pts, 9 rebs, 2 blks). But Nathan Harris (28 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls) would not let the Tropics fall. As the clock wound down, Harris was fouled and sent to the line to decide the game. He hit the final free throw to put the Tropics up for good, 70-69, and to earn a deserved Gold Cup MVP.

Ice in his veins: Nathan Harris sank the game-winning free throw to walk away a champion.

For the 30 Somethings, they now have a new rival in the KC region as they and the Tropics have split the first two Gold Cups in Kansas City. We can't wait to see what the Summer session has in store. Congratulations to the Tropics for their championship season!

A fantastic Gold Cup was followed by an offensive firecracker, as the East All-Stars beat the West All-Stars 107-101 in the Kansas City All-Star Game. The East were anchored by the game's MVP as Michael Orr (The Show) had 32 points and 19 rebounds while shooting 4-6 from deep. Cavaliers forward Scott Underwood (22 pts, 8 rebs, 2 stls) and The Show's Zeke Cuddy (18 pts, 8 rebs, 8 asts, and the winner of the 3pt contest) had nice statlines for the East as well. For the defeated West, Wolfpack guard Ben Gaskins (30 pts, 10 rebs, 6 asts) and JC Hoops guard Larry Pandjanis (30 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts) racked up some major stats.

The Spears went ahead early and never looked back as they became the first champions of UH Denver.

As they entered the playoffs on a three-game slide, Spears knew they had to do something to make a title run. That "something" turned out to be offense as Spears scored 86 ppg throughout the playoffs to reach the Gold Cup game against Champion Bank, a team which had just one loss - to the Spears in week one.

So it was fitting that the two would meet again in the Gold Cup, although it wasn't the storybook ending that Champion Bank had in mind. Spears dominated from opening tip to closing buzzer, posting a 96-71 triumph to win the Denver Gold Cup. Everything was clicking for Spears: they shot 47% from the field, 44% from beyond the arc (14-32), and they garnered a +17 rebounding advantage.

Chris Telkamp was phenomenal off the bench, tallying 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in 25 minutes. Telkamp was one of three 20-point scorers for Spears, as Andy D'Agostino (24 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts) and team captain John Spears (21 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts, 2 stls, 2 blks on his way to the Gold Cup MVP) were brilliant as well. The five-manned effort of Champion Bank struggled to connect offensively, as they shot 41% from the field and committed 14 turnovers. Tyler Theobald (20 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) and Antonez Paz (18 pts, 9 rebs, 3 stls) contributed big minutes in the loss.

Congratulations to our Denver champions, Spears!

Glory for No Size as they reign supreme in the Windy City.

An up-and-down season for No Size ended in greatness last night, as they defeated Vertically Challenged 64-53 in the Chicago Gold Cup. A power-packed second half drove No Size to the win, as they outrebounded VC by 12, shot 53% from the floor, and reached the charity stripe 19 times (hitting 13).

A massive bench performance from John Kreis (10 points and 12 boards in 13 minutes) coupled with the play of guard Jason Hayes (17 pts, 7 rebs, 2 asts) paced No Size to the 11-point victory. Tanzy Seward (17 pts, 9 rebs, 2 asts) and Josh Stevenson (14 pts, 11 rebs, 2 asts) kept Vertically Challenged alive in the early-going, but No Size pulled away as the minutes slipped away in the Chicago Championship.

VC's 6-2 season and run to the Gold Cup is a great start for this Chicago franchise, and they will surely fine-tune their squad to make a run next season. As for No Size, their 4-4 regular season and subsequent 3-0 sweep of the playoffs garnered them the first ever Gold Cup in UH Chicago's history. Congratulations No Size!

Dream Team were all smiles after their 2-point win earned them a spot in the Arizona Gold Cup.

Dream Team's dominance in Tempe was sealed last night, as they defeated Donovan McNabb (37 pts, 70% shooting, 13 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls) and Arizona's Best 91-89.

After falling behind by 8 points at the break, Dream Team amassed a second half barrage - they outscored Arizona's Best 58-48 and shot 49% from the field. Kevin Johnson (25 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) and Jon Ziri (21 pts, 18 rebounds, 2 stls) proved too much for Arizona's Best, who besides McNabb received great games from Doug Harris (18 pts, 5 rebs, 6 asts, 3 stls) and MVP-winner Parfait Nayigihugu (21 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 2 stls).

Dream Team will be anxiously awaiting the result from this Thursday's Scottsdale Finals, as the victor of the Movers & Shakers/PHX Ballas game will be their next - and final - opponent for the Spring 2009 Arizona Gold Cup.

HOW WILL TWO-WEEK BREAK AFFECT BOBCATS, RIDDLERS IN MPLS SOUTH REC TITLE GAME?: It's been a fortnight since either of these teams took to the courts, and the question on people's minds is how will the extended break impact the title game? May the teams be extra rested or rusted, there is still plenty of motivation for the game.

History Repeated: Gold Cup number two was just as sweet for the Naptown Hooperz

The script from the first season of UH Indy was so good, the Naptown Hooperz decided to make a sequel.

For the second straight season, the Hooperz lost to the Kenny Kings in the regular season - only to come back and defeat the regional powerhouse in the Gold Cup in a nail-biting, defensive thriller 46-44. Last season's championship was certainly a surprise, but this go-around there is no doubting the Naptown Hooperz' greatness. Sal Vegas will need to adjust his lines next season if the Kenny Kings and Naptown Hooperz complete the Indy Gold Cup trilogy.

Darriel Hunter won Gold Cup MVP honors for his 20-point, 6-rebound, 2-assist night for the Hooperz. Naptown did a fantastic job of locking up the Kenny Kings - who were without leading scorer Steven WIlliams - holding them to just 33% shooting. The Hooperz were down at the break 24-17, but used a marvelous late run to earn the 2-point win. Terron Bibbs of the Kings (16 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts, 3 stls) did what he could to keep his squad alive, but the Hooperz combo of Hunter and Donald Crumpton (8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists) finalized the result.

So what do you think Indianapolis? Is there a three-peat in the Naptown Hooperz' future? And what do the Kenny Kings need to do to finally get over the hump?

Lloyd Carr celebrates with the Gold Cup.

On Saturday, word came down from the UH League offices regarding the winners of the Top Flight regional MVP awards. Each of those winners become nominees for the National MVP Award.

A firestorm of controversy surrounds the nominations, though, as defending National MVP Chad Clum did not win the Scottsdale MVP despite some LeBron-esque numbers. The Movers & Shakers front office was not available for immediate comment.

Despite the incident, league officials are currently reviewing every candidate's résumé and will be prepared to crown the National MVP on Friday. Until then, good luck to each of these players:

Phillip Aholt - Pup 'n' Suds, Scottsdale
Glenn Keller - Bulldogs, Indianapolis
Duke Seward - Vertically Challenged, Chicago
John Hawkins - The Show, Kansas City
Sean Kelly - Champion Bank, Denver
David Watson - Wine Chateau, St. Louis
Todd Klostermann - Rabine Financial, Omaha
Luke Witt - Kings, Minneapolis
Parfait Nayigihugu - Arizona's Best, Tempe

Third time was a charm for Luke Sontowski (43) and Cobra Kai, who finally beat Steve Schmidt (14) and The Rapture.

- Omaha's Rabine Financial played their semi-finals contest against the Bruins without fire-starters Troy Malone and Todd Klostermann, and it showed as the Bruins cruised 80-65. Gene Rafter had 17 points and 11 rebounds in an attempt to bolster Rabine's depleted attack, but the Bruins were clinical from deep (14-29 from 3pt range) and unloaded a 45-23 first half lead as they earned a spot in Omaha's first Gold Cup game. Cy Carlson had 25 points (7-13 from beyond the arc) and 7 rebounds, while Craig Hector's big night (11 pts, 15 rebs, 8 asts, 2 stls) keyed the Bruins performance. Heading to the offseason, Rabine Financial will be under pressure from their fan base to dole out max contracts to Klostermann and Malone as they attempt to make a run at the championship in Summer.

- Movers & Shakers will defend their Scottsdale title next week after pounding Old School 97-79. Tyler Bolli had a game-high 30 points, along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Chad Clum (29 pts, 13 rebs, 7 asts, 3 stls) put together another MVP-caliber line for M&S, while his teammate Matt Hatten (19 points, 12 rebounds) controlled the interior against a solid Old School frontcourt. Brent Diedrich (29 points) played well in the loss.

- An unexpected result from Minneapolis North propelled Cobra Kai over The Rapture 65-52 and into the Minneapolis Rec Gold Cup game at the Target Center. Cobra Kai had lost their previous two meetings to The Rapture where they were unable to field a five-man lineup. Last night, CK's seven players trumped the iron-five of The Rapture thanks to Luke Sontowski (15 pts, 10 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) and the defense of Dustin Dupont (14 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls). A couple of 20-point nights from James McRoberts and Dan Simmer were not enough to overcome 20 committed turnovers by the once mighty Rapture. Falling a game short of the big stage, The Rapture will have to double their offseason efforts to re-organize their franchise. For Cobra Kai, they get the glory of representing the North at the Target Center in the first ever Minneapolis area Gold Cup.

#3 Cobra Kai (N) v. winner of Riddlers/Bobcats (S)

- A balanced effort from the PHX Ballas earned them a spot in the Scottsdale Finals, as they defeated Pup 'n' Suds 70-55. The all-around performances of Tyrone Jones (15 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts) and Anthony Hesano (18 pts, 6 rebs, 7 asts) paced PHX by the one-man-show of Phillip Aholt (29 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls, 2 blks) and the Pup 'n' Suds; now the Ballas can focus their attention on finding a way past the Movers & Shakers, who they did not face this season.

#1 Movers & Shakers v. #2 PHX Ballas

- The early edition of the Omaha semi-finals pitted #1 TBD against 5th-seeded PicksPokerTables.com. Without their center Aaron Langhorst, TBD was outmatched in the paint and were soundly beaten 68-49. The inside-outside combination of PPT center Bobby Wiese (16 pts, 13 rebs, 5 asts, 2 stls, 4 blks) and guard Josh Hopwood (23 points, 5-12 from deep) proved too much for TBD who shot just 29% and were outrebounded by eight. PicksPokerTables.com will have to tighten up their free throw shooting (12-31, 39%) ahead of their Gold Cup clash with the Bruins.

Is this the best team in UH? Wine Chateau's back-to-back Gold Cups in St. Louis' first two seasons make a compelling argument.

The St. Louis Gold Cup game saw the Wine Chateau collect their second championship in as many seasons as they dispatched And 1 by 19 points.

There was doubt at halftime if Wine Chateau could pull off the repeat. And 1 led 30-28 at the break and seemed poised to hold off a Randy Klohmann-less Wine Chateau. But a poor shooting night (30% FG), coupled with 13 turnovers and no subs, spelled doom for And 1. David Watson (25 pts, 21 rebs, 2 blks) posted the sixth 20-20 game of his career (and third this season), sending a message to the UH community 36 hours before the MVP winners are announced. Fellow MVP candidate Spencer Garrett of And 1 had a nice game as well (17 pts, 7 rebs, 3 stls, 2 blks) even though he shot an uncharacteristic 29% from the floor. Garrett's teammate Ian Varley tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists, but Watson, Neil Lopez (20 points, 4 steals), and Veera Saranathan (17 pts, 7 rebs, 2 stls) steered Wine Chateau to a dynastic triumph.

Congratulations Wine Chateau on your second consecutive Gold Cup!

So, St. Louis ballers: think you can take down the Wine Chateau juggernaut? Re-sign your team or bring a new franchise to the UH courts by signing up for Summer Season today!

Following the Gold Cup, the East All-Stars launched themselves to a 20-point first half lead and never looked back, beating the West All-Stars 87-75 in the St. Louis All-Star Game. Both squads got huge efforts from their lone bench players as Kareem Salameh (East, 5 Pillars) had 29 points and 9 rebounds while garnering All-Star MVP honors, and Rich Widener (West, The Squad) responded with 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.

The West made a push in the second session behind Spencer Garrett (And 1, 16 pts, 14 rebs, 5 asts, 2 stls) and Mika Ewald (The Squad, 15 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls). It was not to be however, as Marcus Woods (Bulls, 17 pts, 7 rebs, 6 asts) and Hasnain Aijaz (5 Pillars, 16 pts, 12 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls) led the East to the win.

The good night for 5 Pillars and the East continued as Ilijas Gusmirovic won the 3pt Competition with a final round score of 17.

The victorious Eastern All-Stars enjoy a post-game celebration.
