UH Uni Watch has been on an extremely important, work-related project for the better part of a month now. So last week we deicded to put down the Xbox controllers it was time to dust off our computers and get to searching the UH Archives for some content.
It was then we received a photo from UH Minneapolis league coordinator Chad Wessels that left us with our jaw on the floor... click and be amazed.
That's right folks, the Nuggets finally got new uniforms last week, ridding themselves of these babies which were more or less the same color on both sides, forcing UH schedulers to make the Nuggets the home team for every game of every season. But that's all in the past now, and considering the bang-up job the Nuggets did with this uni set, all is forgiven. Let's break it down:
- My first reaction: WOW those are shiny. Couldn't help but think that if your car battery died, you could hook one of these uniforms up to it and be juiced in no time.
- The Nuggets went all out, pairing their jerseys with matching shorts. The forward-sweeping shorts stripe is simple enough that it adds (instead of detracting) to the streamlined design. Diggin' it.
- Here's a great view of the jersey side panel + shorts stripe in action. Looks a little too much like a flowing river, or wind, or something for my taste.
- It's very tough to see in this shot, but that white side panel runs around the arm holes and towards the back of the jersey - which creates an effect similar to Nike's System of Dress unis from the college game (look at the maroon stripe on the guy in the yellow jersey). A better, and far more appropriate, view of Nike's SODs: Michael Baker rocking the E&G threads.
- No questions asked, the best part of the new Nuggets jersey is on the front where the uni features a fantastic Denver Nuggets alternate logo and the increasingly basketball-rare script logo - both rendered in gold. The numbers in gold really pop on the powder blue - though on the white side, the gold numbers sink into the jersey and become lost visually.
- During the course of the uniform changeover, it appears that Dan Murphy (farthest left in the lead photo) had a change of uni-number heart. He moved from #42 to Chauncey Billups' #7. Murphy seems to be the outlier for changing numbers, as all other Nuggets kept their numbers the same.
Overall, these fall short of the best jerseys in all of UH - but, we'll leave that argument for another time. I give the Nuggets new jerseys a solid B, moving to a B+ if they throw some powder blue trim on the yellow numbers for their home whites.
(Lastly, take a look at the lead photo again. It might just be the lighting or the flash of the camera, but I swear there is a difference in how shiny the jerseys are versus the shorts. If my assumption turns out to be correct, then move the grade up to an A+. Back in the NBA hayday, it was common for the jerseys and shorts to be mismatched, and that trend even continued into the 80's (check out James Worthy in the background). But for the Nuggets to bring this odd uni element back to life in the year 2009 - even if it was only be accident - is ridiculously cool to the nth degree. Kudos, guys.)
UH Uni Watch Quick Hits: I can't imagine how this moment in MPLS North gets replicated ever again. That's, from left-to-right, Tom Harkman, Matt Grantz, and Brendan Ciatti-Miller completing the 1-2-3 trifecta... Can you ride the Funkwagon to Detox? More than likely, yes... Looks like the Cavaliers of Kansas City are sporting some new gear... Robert Parish lives!... A bit tough to see, but Chad Clum's Str8 Heat franchise in Scottsdale and Tempe got new uniforms for their inaugural season. And they're red. History lesson here... the PHX Ballas of Scottsdale have added to their core of uni-wearers. Nicely done, PHX. Added bonus on the Ballas jersey: the nameplates... It does a body good (that's Team Milk - major "duh" alert - from Houston... nice Oilers color treatment, btw)... Pardon this sideways shot from Omaha, but is that a pink headband?
