Clum (L), Varley (C), and Ward (R) have their eyes on the National MVP prize, which will be announced on Wednesday.

The Most Valuable Player award winners were made public on Friday, and now each region's MVP has a shot at the National MVP title.  With the Wednesday announcement close at hand, it's time to look at each player's MVP résumés:

Jesse Steele, Knicks - Berkeley Heights

Though he made just five appearances for the Knicks, Steele earned a reputation in New Jersey as an offensive sparkplug.  His 32.3 ppg led Berkeley Heights in scoring this Summer, and with two headline-worthy performances (a 10 for 19 three-point shooting display in his debut, and a triple-double on August 12th), Steele was a lock for MVP out East.

Kenny Olafeso, Wet Bandits - Bloomington South

Alongside twin brother and Bloomington South's Defensive Player of the Season, Peter Olafeso, Kenny led the Wet Bandits to a 7-1 record.  Including the playoffs, Kenny Olafeso missed just 32 minutes of action this Summer.  A constant threat, Kenny posted tremendous all-around averages of 21.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.3 rpg, and 2 spg - oh, and a season shooting clip of 61.5% certainly won't hurt his chances either.

Hammie Ward III, Storm - Lake Houston

A big man with range, Hammie Ward III was - and is - a near unstoppable weapon in the Storm's arsenal.  With six double-doubles (including one in his UH debut, possibly his best game to date), a seven-game streak with at least one block to end the Summer, and a 45% 3PT shooting clip, Ward would be a handful for any team in Ultimate Hoops.

Jon Bowling, Parliament - Omaha

Bowling may have missed three games, but when he was on the court, there was none better.  Bowling won the Defensive Player award as well, and averaging 13.8 rpg, 1.1 spg, and 2.5 bpg indicates just how strong an interior presence he is.  Bowling also shot 53% from the field and had three games with 18 rebounds.

Dan Morrow, Wolfpack - Overland Park

The centerpiece of the Wolfpack's unbeaten Summer, Morrow had at least 9 rebounds and 3 assists in every game.  Though his shooting stroke slumped in the final four games, Morrow still managed 52% FGs on the season.  The rookie will look to build on his impressive inaugural campaign that saw him lead the Pack in scoring, rebounding, and assists.

Chad Clum, Str8 Heat - Scottsdale and Tempe

Mr. Triple-Double did not win a Gold Cup for the second straight year, but if anyone is the frontrunner for National MVP, it has to be Chad Clum.  Playing for his Str8 Heat franchise in both UH Phoenix locations, Clum was an absolute wrecking ball: a combined nine triple-doubles, six games with at least 20 rebounds, and a ridiculous 65% combined shooting clip.

Doug Lambert, No Size - Warrenville

Shooting 57% from the floor and 52% from downtown, Lambert was an inside-outside assassin who finished the Chicago summer with 26.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg.  His mysterious absence from the Gold Cup game cost No Size a chance at back-to-back titles, but make no mistake - Lambert is a force to be reckoned with.

Ian Varley, And 1 - West County

David Watson may have had more impressive numbers, but Varley won the championship and he was no slouch in the statistical department either.  Varley finished the summer with 19.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg, and 1.2 bpg, and on an And 1 team that thrived on player rotation, Varley's constant presence in the lineup struck fear in the hearts of West County opponents.

THRILLERS: West County (L) and Omaha (R) saw drama in their All-Star Games, while Leland Devlin (center) sniped the three-point crown in Phoenix.

- Tempe All-Stars 92, Scottsdale All-Stars 90: Chad Clum (Str8 Heat) chose Scottsdale, and led the team in points (26), rebounds (11) and shooting (85% FGs).  Scottsdale took a five-point lead at the break as Tyrone Jones (PHX Ballas) had 21 points (82% FGs), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals off the bench.  But Tempe fought back in the second half thanks to Earl Vercher of the Smashers (23 points, 64% FGs) and Ashton Thomas of the Tempe Ballers (14 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls), tying the game with under a minute to go.  Tempe held for the last shot, and, in fitting fashion, Victor Benjamin (arguably Phoenix's best offensive talent) of Arizona's Best hit the final shot as time expired to give Tempe the win.  Benjamin finished with a whopping statline of 29 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

- The Phoenix 3-Point Contest was won by the Smashers' Leland Devlin.  The sharp-shooting guard from Tempe shot 42% from beyond the arc this summer, though he went 0-6 in his final two games with his team.  Anthony Tinsley had 11 points in the final round and Jon Ziri held a slim lead with 12.  But it was Devlin's last shot - a money ball that pushed Devlin to 13 points - that gave him the title of Phoenix's 3-point king.

- Omaha East 125, Omaha West 119: The Eastern All-Stars of Omaha had seven players in double figures (led by Ryan Foster of the Lunch Ladies - 27 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts) on their way to a shootout triumph.  For the West, it was the trio of Marcus Vontz of the Bruins (35 points, 12 rebounds), TJ Rickert of Parliament (32 pts, 8-14 3PTs, 7 rebs, 4 stls), and Mike VanderWilt of Cars2Day/Wall Solutions (22 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) that kept their squad in the game.  Ultimately, the run-and-gun of the East and a +21 rebounding advantage gave them the win.

- Kansas City West 110, Kansas City East 91: Three JC Hoops stars led a rampant second half for the West, as Larry Pandjaris (41 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 10 stls), Zach Witterstaetter (18 pts, 15 rebs, 7 asts), and John Creal (29 pts, 58% FGs, 12 rebs, 4 asts, 3 stls) overwhelmed Dan Morrow (23 pts, 42% 3PTs, 10 rebs, 4 asts, 2 stls) and the East.  The West's 66-point session after the break forced the East to play up-tempo, something that brought more offense (East 1st half - 41 points ... 2nd half - 50 points) but also far more turnovers (16 in total).

- St. Louis West 71, St. Louis East 70: Ian Varley's half-court heave as time expired clanged off the rim and out, giving the Western All-Stars victory by the slimmest of margins.  Rich Wiedner of The Squad (23 points) led the way for the West, while Sean Rose (Wine Chateau - 15 pts, 8 rebs, 2 stls) and Hasnain Aijaz (Bulls - 13 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls) played key minutes.  20 points from Varley (And 1) and a 14-point, 5-rebound, 3-block night from Colin O'Neal (Arches) gave the East hope, but the final result favored Anjo Marasigan (11 points, 15 rebounds) and the West.

- With a four-way tie for first in the St. Louis 3-Point Contest (Alex Van Vliet, Paul Haley, Mike Brown, and Mika Ewald all had 19 points), a shootout ensued to determine the best perimeter shooter.  Ewald finished with 9, Brown with 10, Van Vliet with 14, and the champion of St Louis' 3-Point Contest, Paul Haley, racked up 17 points to win the shootout.

There is a great article by True Hoop which addresses Michael Jordan hinting at his Hall Of Fame acceptance speech a few weeks ago that he could return to the NBA at age 50.  [Jordan is currently 46 years old]

Is it possible?  Could a 50-year-old actually compete in the NBA?  What type of personal training program would they have to subject themselves to?

Who wins in a one-on-one game?  A 30 year-old NBA bench warmer or a 50-year-old Michael Jordan?

Andrew Heieie's all-around game helped the Sphinx earn a playoff spot in MPLS South.

As the top assist man and the third-highest scorer on the Sphinx, Andrew Heieie was instrumental to the success of one of the newest franchises in MPLS South this season.

The shooting guard averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds over the Sphinx's nine-game summer campaign and was just shy of averaging 5 assists per outing, a great total that lands him fifth in the league in assists.  Heieie contributes in all phases of the game - in three games this season, Heieie had at least 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.  He will aim for his first triple-double in the Fall, after the Sphinx lost a tough first round playoff matchup to the Nuggets.

Andrew fielded a few questions from the media recently, and here's what he had to say:

1. Who is your favorite band, and what is your favorite song by that band?

Brad Paisley - "Mud on the Tires"

2. What is your greatest achievement both on and off the court?

On court: Playing in Williams Arena, the Target Center, and the Rochester Civic Center

Off court: Being voted captain of the U of M Duluth baseball team two years in a row

3. If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would you go?

Somewhere in Europe

4. What is your favorite movie?

300

5. What other Life Time activity or sport would you “ultimatize”?

Golf

6. With every player in NBA history to choose from, who would be in the starting lineup of your Ultimate Dream Team?

Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jason Kidd

7. What was your first job?

Watson's - you know, the store with the hot girl in all their commercials.

8. If you could change one NBA rule to your liking, what change would you make and why?

The "defensive three seconds" rule

9. You have one courtside ticket for your Ultimate Hoops game.  Who do you give it to?

Jessica Simpson

10. Down by one, five seconds left.  Which UHer/teammate do you give the ball to?

Nick Colvin, because he can dunk and I can't.
